Cost of Repair

Like many, you probably think that very few printers are worth fixing because so many printers can be purchased for around $100, sometimes less. There are many things to consider when your printer needs repair.

1) What was the retail cost of this printer?
Forget about the sale price, try to remember the retail price. There's no guarantee a similar model will be on sale. Your actual replacement cost may be higher than you think! Lower priced printers aren't likely to last long. They also may not do what you need them to do.

2) How much ink or toner is left?
Even though the cost of ink or toner has nothing to do with the cost of a printer, it's still money you spent. A new printer may not use the same ink. Many only come with starter carts! Fixing may save you more than you know in the long run.

3) Is newer really better?
You probably assume that newer equals better. You might be surprised! Tin solder has replaced lead solder since about 2006. The problems caused by this are severe. Electronics are failing in consumer products as well as commercial products. Over time, tin whiskers form, shorting the boards. Other hassles you may face are installing new drivers and software. Your new printer may also come with a starter cartridge with less ink!
